"About This Site"

Greetings to all of you who have found our little hack, let me introduce us.

I am Colton Provias, the lead developer of the site. Our team is guided by the great Ahana Datta, a wonderful person who has shone her creativity by devising this site. Also helping with the development of the site is Corey Hokanson, who handled setup for templates. And finally, the rest of our blogger team: Ashwath Rabindranath, Enoch Kuo, Maitrayee Dhaka, Michelle Talmor, and Fiona Foo. This team has put a ton of work into bringing life to this simple hack. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did creating it!

Why?
Why did we create this hack? Well, in the Unofficial MIT Chat Room, Ahana raised the idea of us doing a hack of some sort. We batted around a few ideas and decided to spoof the admissions site. At least we will have one hack under our belts in case we are rejected.

How?
Well, we started off by organizing people via the Unofficial MIT Chat Room. People started throwing ideas together and development kicked off shortly afterward. We started off by analyzing the MIT Admissions site and figuring out the best way to spoof it and we modeled our site after it. The entire site works as a functional blog.

Now for my favorite part, explaining the technology behind the hack. Whereas the original site uses MoveableType, I decided on another approach. The site you are looking at now is built on Python/Django. The data is stored in a MySQL backend and the only django plugin we are using is deseb for schema updates. It actually works amazingly well and allowed us to develop a site literally in a matter of days (although it could have been done in mere hours when looking back at it).

To MIT
We mean no harm by spoofing the site. This is just our one attempt at a hack in case we are rejected. I will have to admit, it is quite fun and I honestly would like to see the entire team get in. Heck, even if everyone got in besides me or if everyone is rejected, I will still have made new friends that I will probably keep in contact with for years to come. The benefits of this project have been numerous and I am proud to be on it.

Colton, I'm somewhere beyond impressed right now with the attention to detail on this site. Many props to you all. The font is a bit off, but it's not obvious (except on the front page, possibly). Also, you seem to get less spam, but I can convincingly imitate a spambot in my next comment if you'd like.

@Matt A.: Don't worry, there are quite a few others who don't understand about django. Most of the other bloggers on this project don't!

@anon 1:02: Yes, we actually got Munroe to do the comic. We simply approached him in the chat and asked if he would mind.

@lulu: There are still a few things I have to fix in the comments code. For the most part, it works.

@Bilal: I am still considering adding on a Remember Me field. I was just rushing so I decided not to. When coding the entire site start to finish in a total of 10 hours, some things had to be done quickly.

@Ahana: Speaking of trolls, I don't think I've seen a "First" comment yet. Clearly we didn't completely replicate the site.

@Yan: If you saw some of the emails I've sent to the rest of the team in the past couple of weeks, you would have been scared. I tend to worry about detail quite a bit (take a look at the URLs for example). There are many details in which I still want to iron out, some in the banner images, some on content. Ideally, I wanted to make this site work similar enough to the actual site that it would be enough to initiate a double take.

@Ben: Thank you, but a good bit of the original work with the appearance would have to go to Corey. I just simply ripped it apart and turned it into templates.

Without having problems before, I start to have problems with an otherwise good system. This issues started suddenly and I can't recall installing or changing anything that would cause this issue.

Everytime I plug my Speedtouch USB Wireless network stick into my Windows XP Computer (not laptop) XP reboots itself. Sometimes it does it immediately, other times it'll take 10 seconds or even up to 5 minutes before it restarts. After rebooting it will enter a cycle of rebooting everytime the system gets as far as the mouse cursor. Ocassionally icons will appear and then it'll reboot. As soon as I remove the USB device from the port it boots normally. I can run the computer, play games, work, do whatever and it's okay until the USB wireless stick plugs in again.

I have tried the USB Wireless stick in every USB port available (2 fore and 2 aft). My USB keyboard and wireless mouse work fine in all the available USB ports.

I have run system restore, and gone back as far as I can with that.
I have tried an indentical Speedtouch USB network stick (running fine on another PC) and it does the same. Both sticks work in a second PC.

I have removed and re-installed the Speedtouch software.
I have run a full AVG 8.0 Antivirus scan with no faults found.
I have run hijackthis and with nothing unusual.
I have the 'automatically restart' option undone in the system properties bar with reference to system failures.
I have run Dells System check from the Bios/Startup menu. It threw up a couple of USB connection faults that seemed hardware related. I don't have those details as didn't write them down but could get them if it'd help?

Below are system details etc:
Dell Dimension E522 (12months old)
AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5000+
1024Mhz Ram
Windows XP Media Centre Version 2002. Service Pack 3. Version 5.1.2600.
Internet Explorer Version 7.0.5730.11
